spring has sprung | tallahassee florida photography

Spring break is once again upon us, although with the humidity lately it feels like we skipped both winter and spring and are in the early throes of summer.

On the back deck of my in-laws’ house, it still looks like fall, with some brown leaves scattered on their deck.

The girl and I spent some time outside playing in the leaves – sweeping them up and then jumping around in them.

i love you, i hate you, can i play with your iPhone? | tallahassee family photographer lifestyle black and white portraits

Today was one of those days. Parents know all about those days, when things just don’t get started and don’t ever stay on the right foot. We were going to take the kids to a FSU baseball game, since Lindsey is super excited about baseball, and Matthew is as well. But the kids wouldn’t stop bickering, so we didn’t go. Much drama from children ensued, and praise jeebus for nap time, so everyone could cool off. We ended up running a few errands and since we were nearby, went to the J.R. Alford Greenway and let the kids run around. More drama afterward as we headed home where Matthew told me I should get out of the car and walk home (ha!) and once we got home, told me he hated me, cried, came back to apologize and thankfully both kids fell asleep really easily tonight.

Sundays should not be so stressful! But the kids did have fun. I haven’t taken many pictures of the kids lately and so I’m glad we got to get out of the house for a bit.

little miss flynn | tallahassee family lifestyle portraiture

Hello friends! It’s been way too long since I have posted. This semester finds me finishing up my coursework as a second year doctoral student. I’ve been to Toronto and back, presenting a poster at an academic conference, to the doctor’s a few too many times (both here and in Canada) with a strained back; Matthew’s rocking it in kindergarten and made out like a bandit for Valentine’s Day; Lindsey turned 3 over the Christmas holidays and is already asking about when her next birthday is. I redid the site a smidge – I am never too happy for too long, am I? But wow, did Jessica Ditmer do a nice job or what on that gingko tree up top! Friends of mine from JMU will understand why I love the gingko tree – and for those in Harrisonburg, outside of Ashby Hall is a tree dedicated to a dear friend.

Anyway, onto 2012! Finishing up coursework, hope to take summer and fall semester to do preliminary exam preparation. It’s in this vein of change and life that a new year brings lots of retrospection.

From this time forward, all new bookings will be shot with the express intent of creating black and white images. I shoot in color, so I can use as full range of colors as possible, but process the images to the rich blacks and crisp whites I so love to see. So there it is. From time to time I am sure a color shot will seep through, and who knows – maybe next year I’ll change again. “But Casey, won’t most of the people who would hire you not WANT to hire you if you’re only going to shoot black and white?”

Maybe. I’m sure.

But this is what I love. Because of my academics, my family, my self, I need to do what’s best for all of us, and that means when I do take the time out to have a shoot, it should be doing what I love to do. And I encourage everyone out there – do just that – hire someone who loves to do what they do and you will be happy with the images s/he takes, and it will be worth the time and money to capture those moments in your life that matter.

So any new bookings from here on out will be strictly black and white images. If we’ve already got a session scheduled, I will of course still shoot and process lovely colorized images for you (and maybe convert some to make my heart (and hopefully yours!) go pitter-patter).

In the midst of the flurries of the spring semester (and by flurries, I mean “WOW it’s busy on campus” vs. “oh hey look, is that snow?” because, really, when is it ever snow in Florida?), I snuck out one afternoon around sunset to the J.R. Alford Greenway down on Pedrick Road. It was my first time out there and – dear Tallahassee – WHY haven’t you told me about how beautiful this place is at sunset? We took some pictures on the field and then wandered off the path near the water and got some lovely captures there. Be still my heart.
